Presenting our Flipgrids

September 6, 2018

Today in class, Dr. Smirnova had everyone present their slide from the class slideshow along with their Flipgrid. Upon presenting, we had to talk about our personal experience with science and our blogs. I told the class that I personally did not love science. In my life, I have struggled with learning science. I always appreciated the subject and found scientific facts interesting, but I have struggled to preform well in most of my science classes in my academic career. Science is not my strong point. I am hoping that this class will deepen my understanding of the subject as well as my ability to learn and teach it.
Upon presenting to the class, I was very nervous. I never presented in front of this particular group of people before and I was nervous that I had to show the class a video of myself. The hardest part about this activity was listing three likes and one wish for each presentation we saw. However, it was a good learning experience that I am thankful for. Paying close attention to my classmates' presentations allowed me to realize what elements of presentation are important and need to be stressed.  I gained valuable feedback from Dr. Smirnova and my classmates. Here is some of the feedback I received that I found the most helpful:

  • It is inappropriate to use the word "guys" when addressing a group of students. This is a word I say casually and until this class, it did not occur to me that it is actually inappropriate and I do say it quite often. I will pay close attention when I speak to make sure I no longer use this word.
  • I cannot be shy or embarrassed when talking about myself. I have to provide an excellent example and I have to appear happy and confident in front of my class in order for my students to feel the same way.
  • I cannot rush through my ideas when I am speaking in front of a class. I must take my time and make sure I articulate all of my ideas completely.
  • I need to make more eye contact with the class when I am presenting to them.
Here is my flipgrid! Feel free to watch it and leave some feedback.
